Hello, and a warm welcome to the website of the Leicester Group of Advanced Motorists affiliated to the IAM

I’m David Hage, and I’d very briefly like to tell you a bit about our organisation – though please use one of the links on this page to obtain more information about joining us and receiving free coaching to take the IAM Test successfully, coming to our monthly indoor meetings, or learning about the outdoor events we will be attending or running in the next few months.

Formed in the 1960s as Leicestershire Group of Advanced Motorists, we have played an active role in road safety initiatives on both large and small scales for more than 40 years. Now known as the Leicester Group, we have an excellent  relationship with both the County’s Road Safety Office and Leicestershire Police, actually having our regular meetings at Enderby Police Headquarters, on the third Wednesday of each month. We were naturally delighted when, having taken his IAM Advanced Driving Test with our help, Deputy Chief Constable Chris Eyre accepted our invitation to become Leicester Group’s President in January 2009. Nothing stands still these days, and we are pleased to say Chris Eyre has moved on to further his career - sincerest thanks for all your support Chris, and good luck in the future.

We are pleased to announce that, following on in the same tradition, Assistant Chief Constable Steph Morgan has very graciously agreed to be our President in 2011. Her first appearance in this new role was at our AGM in January, where as well as presenting trophies and advanced driving certificates, she was our guest speaker. Steph has promised to take an active role in the group, and dare I suggest an advanced driving test on the horizon!

As part of the national Skill for Life programme, the Group’s advanced test coaching is, without a doubt, a vital community road safety role. There are very few restrictions on who’s eligible to take part – young or old, male or female, students, disabled, employed, unemployed, or retired - provided you have a roadworthy vehicle you’ll almost certainly be ok to have a go. After all, its not what you drive, but the way you drive it that matters most!

Britain’s roads are becoming more crowded all the time, and we need high-level driving skills to cope better with day-to-day hazards, as well as the unusual things which sometimes happen. This is increasingly being recognised when it comes to our standard driving test. So, if you’ve been driving for just a few months or many years, and you’d like to find out more about the IAM in the East Midlands and how we can help you to be just a bit safer out there, please don’t hesitate to contact us today.

A Skill For Life

Almost everyone thinks that they are a good car driver or a skilled motorbike rider. Whilst everybody has to take the DSA test, thereafter the novice driver/rider is plunged onto Britain’s (and the rest of the world’s) overcrowded roads with no further legal requirement of further driver training.

Observers Page

When you join the Group, you will be allocated an observer to help you prepare for the test.

These are members of the public, like yourself, who originally took the advanced driving test.  Having decided that they would like to help others, they then received extra training to be able to offer guidance, rather than instruction.  Many hold full-time jobs, and a few will also hold instructor qualifications.

Coaching for the Test

We can help you to pass the Advanced Driving Test by showing you what is expected of you on the test. Our observers will show you which aspects of your driving need to be honed in order to reach test standard. You can then be confident that when you take your test you will pass.
